ariel is a centerboard, center cockpit sloop modified for long distance ocean sailing in all weather conditions. built in 1986 she was purchased in 2005 by the current owner and completely renovated below decks (see equipment details). she was extensively refit again in 2014/15 in preparation for a north atlantic crossing. starting in 2015 ariel was sailed from annapolis to denmark via nova scotia, newfoundland, greenland, iceland. faroe islands, shetland and norway. in 2016 she transited the caledonian canal to the scottish western isles, the irish sea, northern spain ending the year in costa blanca spain. in 2017 she sailed back through the straits of gibraltar to morocco, canary islands, cape verde islands to barbados. in 2018 ariel returned to her home port in white stone virginia via the caribbean and the bahamas. ariel is now ready to take on new adventures with an experienced offshore sailor with the energy to tackle the maintenance and upkeep required on this very well-equipped cruising sailboat – unfortunately the current owner no longer has that energy. sails and rigging · loose footed main with hood electric in mast furling. sail was custom built new in 2014 and is strengthened at the outer end of the foot to allow a very strong small triangle for heavy air. the hood furling mechanism was removed in 2012 and sent to rhode island for a complete overhaul. the controller was replaced in 2007. · yankee cut genoa with a heavy-duty schaefer roller furler. the sail can be easily furled in heavy air using the furler line on the secondary winch. · heavy duty storm staysail with no stay but a two part purchase on the halyard. the tack is secured to a wichard folding padeye on the deck which is part of a custom built stainless steel bracket through bolted to the deck and the primary transverse bulkhead aft of the chain locker. this bracket also provides the foundation plate for the anchor windlass (see ground tackle). the sail has a roller furler. · there is a carbon fiber telescoping down wind pole secured on a mast track. it is possible to sail down wind wing on wing with both sails secured by custom rigged preventers. · under normal circumstances all the sails can be deployed and/or furled from the cockpit and ariel is easily sailed by one person. · the mast has single spreaders and all the standing rigging is 3/8” 6-19 stainless steel wire rope; it was last replaced in 2014. · there is a hydraulic back stay adjuster and a spare turn buckle if the preventer should fail. · all of the running rigging was also replaced in 2014. · primary winches are lewmar 55s, secondary winches are andersen 40 sts. there is a lemar 43 cabin top utility winch and two lewmar 40 winches at the mast. · the traveler runs the full width of the cockpit aft and can be operated from the cockpit. · the mainsheet is two part and operated by one of the secondary winches. · the hydrovane wind vane installed on the transom is completely independent of the main rudder and is therefore a legitimate secondary rudder if the main rudder is lost. the hydrovane is operational with the dinghy in the davits
