Description

english phoenix iii is one of the last classic morgan 41 cruisers built with a centerboard (perfect for the chesapeake bay or the islands), designed by charlie morgan. the last one was built in 1972. with 587 hours on the engine and recently installed air conditioning, this classic old boat has excellent comfort and reliable power to cruise, sail, or power whether day sailing or spending the summer cruising. owned and maintained by a very competent sailor phoenix iii is ready to go. practical sailor by darrell nicholson - published:february 20, 2007updated:december 25, 2020 the morgan 41 sloop is arguably one of the best looking of many lovely dual-purpose sailboats that the cruising club of america handicap rating system engendered. one owner described his boat as a bermuda 40 for a regular joe, only prettier. designer charley morgan traces the cruiser-racers heritage, particularly below the waterline, back to olin stephens famous finisterre, and comanche, a 40-foot centerboarder built by wirth munroe, son of famed sharpie designer and south florida pioneer commodore ralph munroe. a well-restored morgan 41 can shine next to some of the most highly regarded classics on the waterfront, so their owners are typically loathe to part with them. if one does land on the market, expect to pay anywhere from $30,000-$60,000 or more, depending on the condition. should you decide to part with it down the road, you should not have a hard time finding a buyer. also comments from practical sailor: morgan 41 – used boat test: a great upgrade candidate for any handy and determined sailor, the morgan 41 is a well-designed, cross-purpose boat with the face of a classic, the heart of a racer, and the body of a cruiser. quick description and walk around the deck there are two distinct variations on the morgan 41. phoenix iii is one of the last classic 41 foot boats that was designed and built by charley morgan of morgan boats in 1972. it is not a center cockpit out island 41. phoenix iii has an aft cockpit and the traditional graceful lines of the racing and cruising sloops of the 1960's and 1970's similar to the hinckleys, sparkman stephens, or rhodes designs. most of the 41's had fewer ports on either side. phoenix iii has 2 fixed large windows aft on either side and 3 opening ports (replaced 6 years ago) so the main cabin, head, and forward cabin have extra ventilation and light. by opening the main cabin hatch, the forward hatch and opening ports, there is plenty of air circulation and light. the hand laid solid fiberglass hull has proved to be completely reliable with no issues with core problems and phoenix iii has had no issues with blisters since being barrier coated about 25 years ago. with an over-all length of 43' counting the anchor platform and bow pulpit, and a waterline length of 30', a low cabin top above the deck, and a tall mast with a large fore triangle you can almost feel the power as she heals giving her a longer waterline and powering through the waves. the white hull with the soft blue pin stripe and waterline are very attractive with the blue mainsail cover and roller furling genoa sunscreen. just enough varnish accent in the handrails and toe rails keeps the traditional look without being an expensive varnish job every year. the light blue color is carried onto the non-skid areas of the deck (now faded with age). starting in the bow is a solid anchor platform with bruce anchor (with room for another anchor) chain and electric windlass., bow pulpit with life lines, bow cleats on starboard, port and a main cleat in the center, a salt water wash down connection on port side. 2 hawse pipes for the anchor rode and chain to the anchor locker below. a spinnaker pole rests in 2 brackets on the port bow. the forward bomar ocean series hatch is in great shape over the forward cabin with teak handrails moving aft. 2 dorade boxes and chrome dorades (one on starboard and one on port) on either side of the mast. on the port side of the cabin top some halyards are led aft to the cockpit around the main cabin hatch in the center of the cabin top. there's a dodger in good condition over the companionway with a custom made hard top in great condition and canvas sides. lewmar primary (3 way) and secondary winches in the main part of the cockpit with a third set of winches on either side of the traveler for trimming the main just right. (on the mast are 3 x 2 speed winches for the halyards and one single winch on the cabin top under the dodger for the lines led back from the mast). along the transom toe rail is a mounting bracket for the ensign, back stay and radar post mount. there's a good size lazarette for fenders and other gear with teak trim, man-overboard and life sling within easy access from the helm station. at the helm is a compass, gps chart plotter (garmin), throttle and gear shift controls, and auto pilot controls (raymarine). also in the main cockpit is the manual winch connection for the centerboard lifting winch. wind gauges are also mounted on the port side of the companionway under the winch (on the cabin top) for the halyards led aft. mounted on the helm pedestal is a folding cockpit table with drop down leaves and large cockpit lockers extend forward of the helm into the cockpit area. inside the cockpit lockers are various types of equipment and gear that will come with the boat. on the port side is an electric panel to turn on outside lighting and the natural gas storage area. an outboard for the dinghy, dock lines, fenders, etc. on the starboard side is also the battery charger and refrigeration unit and shore power cord and still room for more. the engine hour meter was showing 586.6 hours on august 15th. brief walk through below going down the companionway steps the nav station is on the port side with a large double bed aft with cabinets against the wall suspended above the bunk and teak battens against the hull side. next to the nav station is a large hinged storage bin for the trash can behind which are storage drawers.. at the nav station are switches for the 12 volt systems, icom vhf, stereo, 110 outlet, raymarine radar screen and controls. under the berth aft of the nav station are 2 deka 8d marine batteries. under the companionway is access to the engine with access to engine oil filter and siphon hose for easy engine oil change installed, the 12 gallon hot water heater, water pumps, filters and wiring. on starboard is the galley. the galley sink is just to starboard of the companionway leaving a lot of counter space to handle food preparation activity. on the aft wall is the 30 amp service panel with controls for the lights, battery charger, computer (no longer available), hot water heater, and air conditioning. also on the aft wall is one of the 4 stereo speakers. there is a 3 burner stove, lots of cabinet space, and a large refrigerated ice box. moving forward the main salon is very open and easy to move around in because the table is offset to port enough to drop one leaf down and out of the way. there are two good size single bunks on starboard. on port is a "u" shaped couch around the table which can be set up to sleep one person. over the couch is a shelf, a fan and speaker. a kerosene lamp hangs from the bulkhead. the three opening cabin ports in the main cabin (one on port and 2 on starboard) are updates replacing the original all open for ventilation and light. additional natural light and ventilation of course comes in from the main cabin hatch. on starboard, across from the head is a small cabinet and shelf plus a hanging locker. the forward vee berth has a very comfortable mattress and there is plenty of space to walk around or change your clothes if you don't need to insert the mattress filler. storage drawers underneath the mattress and a shelf on starboard and port. (also access to the anchor locker all the way forward.) the toilet is 2 years old. it's electric with a macerator that empties into a 21 gallon holding tank. a "y" valve is connected to the deck fitting or a second macerator to pump overboard. also in the head is a sink and pull out shower head, mirror, and one of the opening ports for ventilation and light. additional information one of the best feature on phoenix iii is the air conditioning system. recently upgraded, the system keeps the cabin comfortable even on the hottest summer days. the floor joists have been stiffened with chocks and fiberglass to stiffen the hull. the shroud chain plates are attached to a horizontal steel i beam under the deck. the forestay was replaced when the profurl was installed around 2000. the starboard shroud was replaced when the current owner bought the boat. the bottom paint is trinidad sr and holds up well. it has been redone every other year and will need to be done before the start of next season. there are 2 water tanks: 1-60 gallon in the bow and 1-35 gallon bladder in the main cabin. total water storage 95 gallons there is also a full awning that covers the entire cockpit (over the boom) with side curtains that zip on if additional coverage is needed for rain or sun protection. additional features and equipment included with phoenix iii: centerboard with minimum draft of 4" 2" and maximum of 9' 5" the primary winches are 3 speed achilles inflatable dinghy with an 8 hp johnson 2 cycle outboard w/ a 3 gallon fuel tank. 2 spare danforth 20 h anchors with spare rodes and chains. the dodger has a "hard top" w/ canvas sides and eisenglass mob & horseshoe retrieval system emergency tiller. 2 spinnaker halyards 3 cabin fans 12 v salt water pump for the galley nav station chart light and compass propane grill npys disclaimer12 the company offers the details of this vessel in good faith but cannot guarantee or warrant the accuracy of this information nor warrant the condition of the vessel. a buyer should instruct his agents, or his surveyors, to investigate such details as the buyer desires validated. this vessel is offered subject to prior sale, price change, or withdrawal without notice. electronics depthsounder, log, speedometer, plotter , autopilot , compass, gps , vhf, radar , radio, cd player, shore power inlet inside equipment electric bilge pump , manual bilge pump, battery charger , air conditioning , heating , hot water , oven , electric head, refrigerator outside equipment cockpit cushions, cockpit table, swimming ladder, tender , electric windlass, bimini top, mainsail cover, spray hood other equipment phoenix iii, wind speed and direction, navigation center , garmin, garmin, raymarine, garmin, ray marine, fully battened mainsail , good for a couple more years inspected and cleaned 2018, furling genoa , good for a couple more years. inspected and cleaned 2018, steering wheel, spinnaker pole, promariner pronautic 1230p, king air (reverse cycle), w/ air conditioning, 12 gallons, sea water pump , in galley sink, 3 burner, technautics air cooled, achilles 10', hard top dodger w/ canvas sides
